Coach Pogue has been around Deon Mix since he was playing junior high football. Even back then he liked what he saw from the talented youngster.
"We had him in junior high and he started playing for us some as a freshman," said Pogue. "His first start was as a sophomore in the 2010 state championship game against Meridian. We knew then that he had a load of ability."
While South Panola High School graduated most of the offensive line in 2010, they had Mix to build around.
"We came back last year and didn't have any experience on the offensive line because we had a lot of guys graduate in 2010," said Pogue. "(Mix) and a lot of other guys were kind of thrown in the fire in 2011. He progressively got better. Then, in the spring, he got a lot better. He was dominate, like we thought he could be."
Pogue has high hopes for the talented offensive lineman going into his senior season.
"We are really excited about him going into his senior year because he has a chance to be about as good as you can find," said Pogue.
What separates Mix from other linemen his size is his athletic ability.
"He has good size but he's also a good athlete," said Pogue. "He's a guy who, potentially, is not even close to how good he can be. I think his best is in front of him."
Pogue believes playing on the college level will allow Mix to become that dominate player.
"When he gets to college and it's nothing but football and school and he's under an offensive line coach all the time, the sky is the limit for him," said the veteran coach. "It will be exciting to see how he develops over the years."
While Mix is a great player on the field, he may be an even better person off.
"Off the field he is a fun-loving, great guy," said Pogue. "You know when he is in the locker room even if you can't see him because you can hear him. And he's always positive and up-lifting in the locker room. He always has a positive attitude and that is positive for the football team."
Pogue gives Mix's family a lot of credit for the type person he is, especially Deon's mother.
"He has a great family," said Pogue. "His mom is a great lady who is very supportive and one of our biggest fans."
