"I committed today," said Shumpert. "I called and told Coach (Greg) Knox and then I got to talk to Coach Mullen.
"They were both real excited and they told me they were real happy to have me committed."
Shumpert reports that Mississippi State's history of solid running backs was a big reason why he decided to become a Bulldog.
"If you look at it, Mississippi State puts a lot of running backs in the league," said Shumpert. "They didn't sign a running back last year and they don't have one for this year, so that gives me a good opportunity."
Shumpert played his cards close to his vest throughout the process, but he reports that he was ready to play his hand.
"I just felt like now was the right time," said Shumpert. "I had been thinking about it for a while and it's getting close to signing day.
"It's a relief to get this over with, but I know there is still going to be some more pressure coming.
"I am just ready to make it official.
"Now that I have committed, Mississippi State is the only visit that I plan to take."
In a previous interview, Shumpert said of Mississippi State, "I like going down there. I always have a good time when I go and I just feel like I am at home down there.
"The coaches always have something good to say." Shumpert is the 21st public commitment for the 2013 signing class for Coach Dan Mullen and staff.
Shumpert is the 10th Mississippi high school senior to commit to the Bulldogs.
We will have much more with Shumpert later in the evening.
