Ferguson has first SEC offer

Mississippi State made the sixth overall offer to St. Francisville (La.) West Feliciana 2014 defensive end Jay Ferguson. More inside...

Jay Ferguson profile

West Feliciana head coach Robb Odom fielded a call Friday morning from Mississippi State offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Les Koenning.

"Coach Koenning called and offered," Odom related. "He said Jay is physical and moves real good. They liked him so much they wanted to go ahead and offer right then. When (Koenning) talked with Jay later, I was headed to a track meet, so I'm not sure what was said there."

Odom likes the progress MSU has made under Dan Mullen, Koenning and the remainder of the staff.

"They've turned it around and are right on the verge of taking that next step," Odom remarked.

Odom asked Koenning for his opinion on Jay's younger brother, 2015 WR Jazz Ferguson, who holds five offers.

"I told him Jazz is also 6-foot-5," Odom said, "and he asked if Jazz is also a d-end. I said, 'he's a wide receiver/defensive back.' I sent Jazz's film and got a text back from Coach Koenning. He said, 'Jazz is really, really good.'"

Memphis, UCF, Louisiana Tech, Grambling State, Tulane and Mississippi State have offered Jay.

Each of those schools, other than MSU, also extended an offer to Jazz.

Odom talked briefly about the brothers' tentative upcoming plans.

"We're trying to get something set up for Florida State," he said. "I don't know if it will be the spring game or this summer. Public schools have a lot of testing coming up.

"They're going to camp at Alabama. The coaches said they just need to come for one day. Coach Burton Burns called last week and asked about both Jay and Jazz."
