"I like the passion of the program, and all the players that came through the program that went to the NFL, I feel like I could be another guy to do that."
Mississippi State is another program that interests the 6-foot-2, 200-pound linebacker.
"I'm interested in Mississippi State because it's an SEC school. I know those are big-time colleges and they send a lot of guys to the NFL, so I'll be looking at Mississippi State."
Smith said he plans to make a decision a week or two after his spring football game. Right now, he isn't naming any leaders.
"I'm still open minded on my recruitment right now, I don't have any top schools but if I was going to say my top Miami would be one of the top three schools," he said.
"I'm really looking at Clemson too, Louisville, and West Virginia, because I've been offered by them too. I'm also going to be looking at the Mississippi State Bulldogs because I got offered by them too."
Several things will factor into Smith's decision, but he said the main thing will be academics.
"Me and my family, we really want to go over all the schools and the academic parts. My family is really big on academics, they feel like football is always going to be there, so I'm looking at schools really based on academics and if the school has my major and how the academic program is. I'm trying to look at all the schools that I do have offers from, see the campuses and everything, then I'll be ready to make a decision," he said.
"I'm looking for a school where I can come in and really develop and take my talents to an NFL caliber level." While Smith wants to see the campuses before making a final decision, he doesn't expect to do that until the summer, even though he plans to commit in spring.
"I probably won't be making any visits until the summer, but I'll still make a decision though," he said.
If Smith ends up making a commitment in spring, it seems like he'll be keeping his mind open until he can get on campus and explore the programs in person. FOX Sports NEXT will have you covered for all of it.
