Stafford Makes the Call

Taylor Stafford has grown up attending sporting events at Mississippi State. Pretty soon his friends and family will be watching him play in the well known venue of Dudy Noble field. Earlier today, the New Hope outfielder accepted a scholarship offer from his beloved Bulldogs.

"I committed about six o'clock tonight," said an excited Stafford. "It has always been my dream to play there, so it didn't take me long to make up my mind."

The Bulldogs' courtship of Stafford really picked up in recent weeks.

"Coach (Butch) Thompson had come to a couple of my high school games," said Stafford. "They were already showing me some interest, but then they invited me to the Labor Day showcase.

"I feel like I did pretty good, but at first they were talking about me going to junior college first.

"They decided to go ahead and offer me and I jumped right on it."

Stafford, who played his summer ball for the Meridian Golden Spikes, projects to play in the outfield on the next level.

"They are talking about me playing center," said Stafford. "I pitch a little bit too, but they are mainly taking about me playing outfield.

"I am real excited about everything and I will do whatever the coaches want me to do."

Other SEC programs have shown some interest in the talented left hander, but Stafford's recruitment was over the moment he picked up the offer he has always wanted.

"We played at a few places this summer," said Stafford. "I played at Ole Miss and they were starting to show me some interest, but I really never gave them a chance to recruit me.

"As soon as Mississippi State offered, I was ready to make my decision.

"Coach (Mitch) Gaspard at Alabama had shown some interest too, but Mississippi State is where I have always wanted to go.

"My mom works at the University, we live about 45 minutes from the campus and we have season tickets to football and all of that.

"I have always dreamed of playing at Mississippi State and now I get the chance to do that.

"Everybody in my family is excited."
