Calhoun Commitment Brings Christmas Cheer

Mississippi State fans received a bit of a present earlier today when Restoration Academy offensive lineman Deion Calhoun made public his verbal commitment to the Bulldogs. The Christmas day commitment is the first for the Mississippi State family since NFL standout K.J. Wright of Olive Branch delivered some holiday greetings of his own.

Deion Calhoun profile

"I committed to Mississippi State and I just wanted to put it out there on Christmas day," said Calhoun. "I like all of the coaches and the players over there and I am excited about being a Bulldog."

The Fairfield, Alabama product has spent a lot of time on the Mississippi State campus, so he did not need a lot of convincing once the Bulldogs extended their offer.

"I went to the first camp and I went to the Big Dawg camp," said Calhoun. "I got to work with Coach (John) Hevesy and he is a great coach.

"I know he is going to get the most out of me. He is going to make me work hard and that's what I like most about him.

"I like it at Mississippi State and I had a good time every time I went over there."

The Bulldogs' offensive line boss went to see Calhoun in action earlier this year, so the Restoration Academy big man knew Mississippi State was serious about him.

"Coach Hevesy had told me that they were going to offer me, but I just didn't know when," said Calhoun. "I had been waiting for them to offer me, so once they did I knew I was ready to commit.

"They want me to come in and play guard and that's what I want to play.

"I started on O line and D line this year, but O line is my favorite.

"I am excited about playing on the O line at Mississippi State.

"Coach Hevesy has put a lot of lineman into the NFL.

"I like the campus over there, the players and the coaches and I feel like Mississippi State is the best place for me to be."

Calhoun commits to Mississippi State over offers from Memphis, Middle Tennessee State, Southern Miss, Tulane, UAB, Western Kentucky and others.
