Mahaffey Reaping JuCo Success

David Mahaffey was part of a huge crop of offensive lineman in the 2013 Mississippi talent pool. Mahaffey elected to enroll at East Mississippi in an effort to boost his recruiting stock. With a NJCAA National Championship under his belt, the talented offensive guard is beginning to reap the benefits of his decision to take the junior college route.

"It has been a great experience having the chance to be coached by Coach (Buddy) Stephens," explained Mahaffey. "The coaches here have really helped me out.

"We really get some good experience against the talent we play against and get to practice against every day.

"All of that has really helped me polish my skills."

Some recruiters suggested that Mahaffey had some work to do with his footwork coming out of high school.

The Brandon High product is proud to report that he has worked extremely hard to correct any issues.

"It has gotten a lot better," smiled Mahaffey. "I am a lot faster and I feel like I was able to really show that in the National Championship game.

"I feel like that was my best game footwork wise. I felt light and I felt good."

With the Lions winning it all last year, it has lit a fire in Mahaffey who is eager to go defend the National title.

"We want to do the same thing we did last year, win another National Championship," said Mahaffey. "Coach has been telling us that it's ours to lose.

"We should start out #1."

There is a chance that Mahaffey may be somewhere else other than Scooba when East Mississippi takes the field this fall.

The personable lineman has some thinking to do.

"I got an offer from Louisiana Tech this past week for this year," said Mahaffey. "I have talked to Troy and I feel like they are going to offer me.

"I talked to Ole Miss today too.

"I would like to stay close to home, but we'll see what happens.

"I still have some thinking to do about Louisiana Tech. I don't know yet. I haven't decided.

"I still have some things to figure out with them."
