Tiano Nabs SEC Tender

Baylor High School quarterback Nick Tiano had the chance to tour the Mississippi State campus and attend one of the Bulldogs' spring practice sessions over the weekend. Tiano left Starkville with the hope of earning an offer from Coach Dan Mullen and his staff. On Tuesday, that hope was realized when the Bulldogs pulled the trigger.

"I was helping my sister and her new husband move into their new house today and I got a message from Coach (Billy) Gonzales," said Tiano. "He wanted me to call him, so I called him and we talked for a few minutes.

"He was just checking up on me and we were just having a normal conversation."

The tone of the dialogue soon turned more serious.

"Coach Gonzales told me that they were offering me," said Tiano. "He told me that they already liked my film, but after Coach Mullen had the chance to meet me and spend a lot of time with me that they were ready to offer.

"He told me that they like my poise and my leadership and that they are going to recruit me harder than anybody else.

"He said that I was already near the top of their board, but after spending time with me they knew that they wanted to offer."

The Bulldogs join Miami and Tennessee-Chattanoga as schools with offers on the table.

The full impact of Mississippi State's offer has not yet been fully realized, but it appears that the Bulldogs have made quite an impression on the Volunteer State standout.

"I am just so excited," said Tiano. "Mississippi State is a great school and we just loved Starkville when we visited.

"After I got the offer, I was jumping up and down and my mom was crying.

"I had a lot of family with me, when I got the offer, so it was nice to be able to share that with everybody.

"This has been just a great day."

Dan Mullen has coached some great college quarterbacks and that pedigree is something that Tiano has taken notice of.

"Coach Mullen was Tim Tebow's offensive coordinator at Florida and he is a person and a quarterback that I really look up to as a role model on and off the field even though he's not playing in the NFL anymore," said Tiano. "Coach Gonzales said that they want me to be the same type of quarterback and do a lot of the same things he did when he was in college."

The excitement of the moment is still readily apparent in Tiano's emotions and speech, but he plans to take a measure approach to his college decision.

"I may make my decision when I start spring practice with my team in May, but I know want to get it done before the end of the summer," said Tiano. "I still have some things to think about and I am going to decide when I'm ready.

"I know Mississippi State is a great option for me. It's a reasonable distance from home and they have a lot of what I am looking for.

"They will definitely be a factor in my decision."
