MSU (38-19) earned a third consecutive at-large bid to the post-season event. The Bulldogs are joined by the host Ragin' Cajuns (44-8-1), Texas (33-21) and Texas Southern (31-18) in the Lafayette Regional. Louisiana-Lafayette enters the tournament as the top seed in the region and the No. 6 national seed.
Mississippi State begins action in the double-elimination regional Friday against the Longhorns at 3 p.m. CT inside Lamson Park on the campus of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The host Ragin' Cajuns will face Texas Southern at 6 p.m. CT.
The Bulldogs have not faced any of the Lafayette Regional foes this season. In the all-time series, Mississippi State is 0-3 against Texas, but the teams have not met since the 2005 NCAA Tournament. MSU has never faced Texas Southern. Against Louisiana-Lafayette, the Ragin' Cajuns hold a 12-3 advantage in the all-time series. The teams have met just twice since 2006, in 2012 and 2013.
The NCAA Tournament appearance is the 11th in Mississippi State program history and the program is 10-20 in the NCAA event. The three consecutive tournament trips under head coach Vann Stuedeman are the most for the Bulldogs since going to the NCAA's marquee event from 2007-09.
MSU's 38-19 record is the second-best 57-game mark in program history, one victory behind the 2008 squad. The 38 victories, including eight against top-25 opponents, are tied for the fourth most by any Bulldog team. Mississippi State has received votes in the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and USA Softball/ESPN.com polls seven weeks this season.
