CB Maurice Smitherman Profile
While Kaleb Chalmers and Juwuan Briscoe have already committed to the Tigers, Smitherman, a three-star prospect from Minor High School in Adamsville, Alabama, lists Clemson as his favorite.
"They're just in need of cornerbacks and I know that I could play a big role for them," Smitherman told CUTigers over the weekend.
Dabo Swinney called him last Friday.
"He was telling me I'm one of their top prospects and that I could do big things at Clemson," Smitherman said.
He added, "I just like how he's rebuilding Clemson. Clemson is on the uptick."
Smitherman visited Clemson last fall for The Citadel game.
"I like their campus. I just like their school period. They've got good academics there. That's what I really like," he said.
A return trip is in the works.
"I'm going to camp, my first camp, I'm camping at Clemson," Smitherman said.
Behind Clemson is Mississippi State.
"I just like what they're doing down there. It would be fun learning from a former NFL cornerback, coach [Deshea] Townsend," Smitherman said.
As a junior, he had 82 tackles, nine tackles for a loss, nine pass breakups and four interceptions.
