MSU 2015 Commit Brant Blaylock Update

Desoto Central (MS) High School junior outfielder and Mississippi State 2015 commitment Brant Blaylock update.

  • Name: Brant Blaylock
  • Classification: 2015
  • Position: Outfielder
  • Ht, Wt: 6-foot-2, 185
  • High School: Desoto Central (MS) High School
  • Summer Travel Team: Dulins Dodgers
  • Schools of Interest: Committed to Mississippi State

Blaylock is one of three juniors on the Desoto Central High School team that is committed to Mississippi State. The others are righthanded pitcher Keegan James and third baseman/righthanded pitcher Austin Riley. James talks about what Blaylock brings to the team.

"Defensively, he is fast in the outfield," said James. "Offensively, he hits the ball where it is pitched and has tremendous power. He can get around the bases really quick and makes things happen. If somebody bobbles a ball in the outfield he'll take second base in a heartbeat."

Blaylock, James and Riley have been playing baseball together since they were seven-years-old. They even play on the same summer travel team, the Dulins Dodgers. Blaylock believes playing together for so long has helped them chemistry-wise.

"We have a lot of chemistry because we have been doing the same thing together since we were little," said Blaylock. "It's always been me, Austin and Keegan together, no matter where we play. We even bat back-to-back-to-back in the lineup on our high school team."

Because they bat next to each other in the lineup, Blaylock feels that helps him provide pointers to his two teammates early in the game when they are still getting a feel about the opposing pitcher.

"I will immediately, say I strike out or do something else, stop when I go by Keegan and tell him the order of the pitches the pitcher threw me, where he threw it on the plate, what I think his tendencies are," said Blaylock. "Basically, I tell him about my at-bat and they can build off of that."

Blaylock continues to work on his game and has seen vast improvement since last season.

"I have actually gotten a lot stronger," said Blaylock. "I think last year I was about 6-foot, 160 pounds. I was a skinny kid who could run. Now, I've gotten in the weight room and stayed after school and lifted tires on the football field. I did that on my own. Me, (Ole Miss 2014 signee) Kyle Watson, Keegan and Austin did it. I was also up in the morning, winter and fall, working out at 5:30. I wanted to play college baseball so I decided that I would do whatever it took to do that."

Although he's still got another year of high school baseball to play before he attends Mississippi State, he keeps up with his future team as much as possible.

"I keep up with them on twitter and I've been watching their SEC games," said Blaylock. "They smacked South Carolina yesterday and that was really nice to watch. They play really well together as a team and that is something that I really look forward to."
