The Adamsville (Ala.) Minor cornerback, a three-star on Scout.com and the No. 2 corner in-state, lacks ideal size so his recruitment was stuck at zero offers at this time a year ago.
Breakout camp performances via blurring speed and solid hips changed his numbers in a hurry, and a flurry began. The SEC, ACC, Big Ten, Pac-12 and nearly every conference in between became interested in the 5-foot-9, 172-pounder.
"I'm camping at Alabama, Mississippi State and Clemson for now, and going to the IMG tournament (June 20-22)," he said. "Just to cover some guys and watch the skill of play the DB coach(es) likes.
"But those two are still my top two. I am looking to commit two to three weeks from now."
Smitherman has a criteria he's still breaking down in trying to separate the Tigers and Bulldogs atop his list, barring any more offers he adds in the meantime.
"Getting playing time early, a winning program that can have a chance of winning a national championship, and building a family and having success there for four years," he said. "I'll get a better look at camp."
Scout tabs Smitherman as the No. 56 cornerback prospect in the class of 2015.
