Tigers In the Lead For Big Cat Visitor

Copiah-Lincoln defensive end Jonathan Calvin discusses his interest in Auburn and why the Tigers are his favorite.

Junior college defensive end Jonathan Calvin liked Big Cat Weekend so much he notes that he came close to committing to the Tigers on his first visit to the Auburn campus.

""It was a great weekend and it was exactly what I expected," said the 6-4, 248-pound defensive end from Copiah-Lincoln Junior College in Mississippi. "I went out last night and everybody is like family."

Already friends with his former teammate, Xavier Dampeer who transferred to play center for the Tigers in January, Calvin said he is also seriously considering a move to Auburn after he graduates in December.

"I?have narrowed it down to Auburn and Mississippi State and Auburn is the one standing out now," he said, noting that he came close to verbally pledging to the Tigers on Saturday. "I had to hold back because I am probably going to take a visit to Tennessee next weekend."

The prospect noted that he doesn't plan to wait long to make a decision. "I will probably be ready to do it the last week in June," he said.

He said Auburn is a possible destination for multiple reasons.

"They have six defensive linemen who are leaving after this year and he (Defensive Line Coach Rodney Garner) is in need of D-linemen," Calvin said. "I am want to go to a place where I can come in and immediately play, immediately go to work."

He pointed out that his experience on the Plains confirmed what Dampeer told him about Auburn. "Xavier likes Auburn a lot," Calvin said. "He said the people are cool and they treat him like family and they treated me like family, too."

He also noted that he likes the coaches who are recruiting him--Garner and Melvin Smith. "Coach Garner is a good man and Coach (Melvin) Smith is a cool guy, too."

The prospect notes that Garner offered him a scholarship after watching him perform in spring drills. "He said I remind him of the guy (Dee Ford) who just got drafted," Calvin pointed out.

Commenting on his time frame to make a college pick, "I am really trying to get my decision over fast so I won't have distractions during the season. I want to get it out of the way so at the last minute I won't be stressing."

The defensive end added, "I already liked Auburn, but now I?like them even more now."
