John Hevesy Interview, June 23, 2014

Mississippi State offensive line coach John Hevesy talks one-on-one with Gene's Page about his position players.

What are your thoughts about your position players going into the season?
"We had a good spring. We worked on developing the younger guys.

"Going into the season, the guys who will play are Damien (Robinson) and Blaine (Clausell) at the tackle positions. Ben (Beckwith) and Jamaal (Clayborn) at the guards and Dillon (Day) at center. Those are the first five right now and I feel really good about them.

"Justin Malon is coming back and can play at either guard or tackle. I also think Archie Muniz did a great job as the backup center during the spring, which, to me, was good for him.

"(Young players) Justin Senior, Cole Carter, Devon Desper all had good springs, developed and started understanding the system better. They have to continue developing but they also are now at a point where they have to be ready to play. "Kent Flowers, Jake Thomas, our two redshirt freshmen, and Rufus Warren, who moved over from tight end to the offensive line, got better during the spring but they also have to continue to develop during the summer. Then, in fall camp, they have to show me even more to get themselves into that two-deep depth chart so that they can play.

"(Junior College transfer) Jocquell Johnson was hurt during the spring. We'll see what he can do when fall camp rolls around."

What needs to happen for you to feel like it was a successful season for your offensive linemen?
"They have played a lot but we have to get more chemistry from the starting five. We also have to have Justin Malone come back and perform like we know that he can. And we need six, seven or eight guys ready to come in and play. If we get that, then it will be a successful season."
