Big Dawg Bound

Mississippi State secured the commitment of one of the southeast's top corners when Minor High School product Maurice Smitherman made the call for Mississippi State just over six weeks ago. Since that time, some schools have tried to test the level of Smitherman's commitment to no avail. The personable Smitherman is headed back to Starkville this weekend for the annual Big Dawg camp.

"The last time I went down there I didn't camp," said Smitherman. "I just visited and talked with the coaches.

"I was talking with Coach (Deshea) Townsend about that the other day.

"This will be the first time we get to work together, so I am ready to hear what he has to say.

"I know there are some things he is going to want me to work on."

LSU recently made some overtures in Smitherman's direction, but it appears the Tigers' interest is not being reciprocated.

"I am not going to LSU," said Smitherman. "I am going to Mississippi State this weekend to meet the other recruits and do some recruiting myself.

"I know a lot of the guys that are committed to Mississippi State and we have had some brief conversations on twitter.

"I am ready to get down there together, so we can see what everybody is about."

While some of the other Bulldog pledges are working hard to harvest some more talent from the Magnolia State of Mississippi, Smitherman looks to influence some of his home state's top prospects.

"I am trying to get some of these players from Alabama to go with me over there," said Smitherman. "I was talking with Keith Mixon and Nick Gibson last night about it.

"We need them to commit too and we need to get some of those guys from Hoover too."
