  • Murphy had his mind made up for awhile but decided to wait until the Big Dawg Camp to announce his commitment to Mississippi State.

"I called (head) Coach (Can) Mullen (to tell him I wanted to commit) and he said he was happy about me being part of the family," said Murphy. "We talked about what day and we both settled on this day (Big Dawg Camp). One big thing about doing it today was because we were going to have a lot of other top recruits here. If I committed, I wanted it to have a ripple effect and have other recruits possibly commit. And we got a lot of commits today."

Mullen letting Murphy wait on making his official commitment at Big Dawg Camp impressed Murphy.

"Him (allowing me to announce my commitment this way) makes me respect him even more because a lot of coaches wouldn't have done it that way," said Murphy. "A lot of coaches would pressure you to commit and tell you all the good things about their school. He told me it was up to me and to enjoy the recruiting process. He told me that they would always be there for me and that I knew what they were about."

He explained what caused him to commit to Mississippi State.

"I wouldn't say that playing for Mississippi State was a dream of mine but living in Mississippi for a time and playing for my home school, I never thought that would happen," said Murphy. "Thinking about it now is amazing. That clock on the wall with that Bulldog, I am ending up being a player there. I am very excited to be a part of this program and part of this family. I look forward to getting here."

And another important factor was having family nearby to support him.

"I have my family here (in Mississippi), my mom and my grandparents, to support me if I ever need them and that means a lot to me," said Murphy.

Something else that really impressed him while attending the Big Dawg Camp were the number of current MSU players who were there to watch the camp and offer their support to the prospects at the camp.

"There were some times during the weight room workouts where we were going through some pretty tough workouts and the players were right there supporting me, helping me get through it," said Murphy. "Seeing that support and the family value this program creates reinforces my decision. It makes me realize this was the right decision to make."
