Delvin Zinn Commits To MSU Baseball

Pontotoc (MS) High School class of 2015 middle infielder Delvin Zinn talks about his commitment to Mississippi State.

  • Name: Delvin Zinn
  • Classification: 2015
  • Position: MIF
  • Ht, Wt: 5-foot-11, 170
  • High School: Pontotoc (MS) High School
  • Summer Travel Team: Team Mississippi
  • Schools of Interest: Committed to Mississippi State

"I committed last night," said Zinn. "I told (MSU head) Coach (John) Cohen and (MSU associate head) Coach (Butch) Thompson. I called Butch first, then I called Coach Cohen. It was great telling them. It made my night. Coach Thompson was actually at his anniversary dinner when he answered his phone."

Mississippi State saw Zinn play during the July, 2014 17u and 16u World Wood Bat Association National Championships and liked what they saw.

"They started recruiting me in July," said Zinn. "They saw me at Perfect Game (in Atlanta, Georgia)."

Thompson told Zinn what impressed him about him as a baseball player.

"Coach (Butch) Thompson said I am dynamic, have good feet, have a lot of range and am quick on the bases," said Zinn, who plays shortstop for his high school team. "They recruited me to play middle infield."

Zinn explained what impressed him about Mississippi State.

"I love Coach Thompson, Coach Mingione and Coach Cohen," said Zinn. "And I like their facilities. I like the weight room that they have. I also like their cafeteria and academic center."

After taking his visits, he decided that Mississippi State was the best fit for him.

"I looked at all of my options, Ole Miss, Southern Miss and Mississippi State," said Zinn. "Ole Miss has a lot of shortstops and State and Southern have senior shortstops. I have always wanted to play in the SEC and they give me a chance to play close to home. I liked their offer and decided to commit."

He had offers from those three schools and one other.

"I had offers from Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Southern Miss and Pittsburgh," said Zinn.

Team Mississippi president and Atlanta Braves Associate Scout Josh Buford, Zinn's travel team coach, feels Mississippi State is getting an outstanding player and person.

"Delvin is a young man who has great tools and is filled with intangibles," said Buford. "Offensively, he's a very patient hitter who likes to work the count. He has lightning quick hands and a great eye for the baseball. Once on the base paths he becomes a game changer. Defensively he's one of the smoothest players I've ever coached; great footwork, great hands and a leader on the field. He's super athletic and can make some unbelievable plays look routine.

"As a young man, I can't say enough good things about Delvin. He's a guy who loves The Lord, loves people and is always a joy to be around. He's always trying to find ways to make his team better. It's been an honor to have him be a part of our organization and I am excited about his journey and future. I look forward to seeing him have a successful career at Mississippi State!"

This past season, Zinn batted .346 for his Pontotoc High School varsity baseball team.
