Mississippi State recently picked up a commitment from Pontotoc High School senior shortstop Delvin Zinn.
While Zinn is very excited about the opportunity to play for Mississippi State, he's not the only one in the Pontotoc community that is excited.
"We at Pontotoc are all very excited about the opportunity that the Bulldog coaching staff has given to Delvin," said Pontotoc High School head baseball coach Casey James. "He is a high quality young man who works very hard both in the classroom and on the baseball field."
According to James, Mississippi State is getting both an outstanding young man and an outstanding athlete.
"Delvin is a multi-sport high school athlete whose athleticism and high baseball IQ have allowed him to make some big time plays for us both defensively and offensively," said James. "He's a guy who can put down a bunt like it's nobody's business. He's a great bunter."
During his five years coaching at Pontotoc, James has seen Zinn become better and better.
"I've seen him progress as a baseball player and athlete throughout the years," said James. "He's become an outstanding athlete who can really play the game of baseball. He can make unbelievable plays in the field due to his athleticism. With a runner on first base trying to steal I've seen Delvin dive across the bag, grab the throw from the catcher and reach down and tag the runner. He's just a great athlete."
James feels like Zinn's prowess on the baseball field is just now starting to be tapped.
"He plays both baseball and basketball," said James. "Once he focuses just on baseball when he gets to Mississippi State there is no telling how good he can be. Plus, he'll get in the weight room and get a lot stronger, something he really hasn't been able to do due to playing both sports. He goes back and forth between baseball and basketball here."
Zinn comes from good stock. His dad Reggie Zinn was an outstanding athlete at Pontotoc High School during the 1980s.
"I never got to see his dad play but the stories I hear in Pontotoc always mention how great of a athlete and baseball player he was," said James. "So, I know he comes from great genes."
