The thumbs-up? This recognition came from the conference’s coaches, who ought to know good ballplayers when they see them in other uniforms. The ‘of sorts’? No Mississippi State player was picked for the first team.
However, the throw-and-catch combo of QB Dak Prescott and WR Jameon Lewis were on the third offense. And CB Jamerson Love was on the third defense.
The three squads included special teams. Alabama and Louisiana State each had 11 players picked to lead the league. Coaches could not vote for their own players.
Coach Dan Mullen’s sixth Mississippi State team returns two players named either Coaches or Associated Press All-SEC for the 2013 season. Jones was Honorable Mention by the media as a true freshman, and TE Malcolm Johnson was second-team by the coaches.
Mississippi State held a closed practice Thursday with no media availability. Mullen will slow the preseason pace for the next two days, and while these were scheduled two weeks ago the timing is accidentally excellent with temperatures at or near 100 degrees on through the weekend.
Fans can meet and greet their heroes on Sunday afternoon with the annual Fan Day. This year is different though because the event will be held at renovated, expanded, and refurbished Davis Wade Stadium (gates open 4:30). So Bulldog boosters can get a look at the improved DWS six days before August 30 kickoff.
At which point, a bunch of Bulldogs will set about changing lots of minds and earning more deserved consideration for the real, post-season All-SEC teams.
