"(Justin) said he had a good time (at Mississippi State)," said Fair. "He said the coaches were really honest and upfront with him. He went to the (Southern Miss-Mississippi State) football game and said the football atmosphere was outstanding as well.
"I think (the coaches) talked to him about the opportunity that he would have at Mississippi State and what would be expected of him."
Mississippi State made quite an impression on the talented member of the class of 2015.
"He likes them a lot," said Fair. "I think he definitely is heavily considering them. I think they are definitely in his top two schools right now. Wyoming is the other school. They offered him and he took an official visit there as well."
Several other schools have also jumped into James' recruiting picture.
"The University of Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, VCU, Wichita State, Alabama and Florida Gulf Coast are a few of them (that are recruiting him)," said Fair.
Fair commented on what Mississippi State likes about James.
"(His MSU recruiting coach, assistant coach) Wes (Flanigan) said he likes his versatility and his ability to do a number of different things," said Fair. "He (also) thinks that JJ shoots the ball well."
Fair described the type player that he thinks James is.
"He is probably a 2/3 (position player)," said Fair. "He handles the ball well enough to be a two. I like his first step explosiveness. He gets off the ground extremely well. He jumps out of the gym. He is very, very athletic."
Although he doesn't know James' timetable as far as when he will make a college choice announcement, he believes whomever he chooses will get a special player.
"I think he is a hidden gem," said Fair, who coached James this summer on the AAU circuit with Team Breakdown. "This was his first year to play on the (AAU) circuit, (and) he did really well. He played with a local AAU team last year and on a local high school last year. I don't think a lot of people know about him and how good he really is. The kid has the talent to be a star."
Last season, James averaged 21.1 points per game, 8.7 rebounds per game and 3.6 assists per game.
