Jackson Dick Paces MSU M-Golf On Final Day

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Sophomore Jackson Dick fired a final-round 64 Tuesday as a young Mississippi State men’s golf team finished 10th at the season-opening Sam Hall Intercollegiate in Hattiesburg, Miss. After beginning Tuesday in 61st at 8-over-par, Dick tied for the lowest round of the day and the fourth lowest in school history to vault into a tie for 20th.

The Australia native’s performance was two shots off the school-record 62 turned in by Alex Rocha in 2000. He tied Chad Ramey’s 2014 SEC Championship round as well as the 64 carded by current MSU assistant coach Noah Goldman in 2008.

“I’m really happy how Jackson bounced back today to play an exceptional round of golf,” coach Clay Homan said. “He did a great job of not over-thinking it and just played.”

Dick birdied six of the first 10 holes including the par-4 ninth, the second-hardest hole of the day. He gave a stroke back on the par-3 11th but returned to form to birdie Nos. 13 and 14.

In his first MSU tournament, junior college transfer Tim Walker shot a final-round 73 to tie for 36th at 3-over 216.

Freshman Taylor Bibbs carded a 76 to tie for 43rd at 5-over 218, while sophomore Dalton Conn’s final-round 73 put him in 51st at 7-over 220.

Tupelo native Austin Rose rounded out the Bulldog lineup, finishing 71st with a 226 in his first collegiate tournament.

Competing as an individual, Ben Follet-Smith shot a 2-over-par, 73 tie for 60th (223).

“This tournament gives us a baseline of the areas where we need to improve, and through hard work, we will get better,” Homan said.

Southeastern Louisiana won the tournament with a 16-under 836, while USM’s Casey Fernandez won the individual title by seven shots with a 14-under 199.

Mississippi State returns to the links Sept. 15-16, traveling to Cordova, Tenn., to participate in the Memphis Intercollegiate at Colonial Country Club.
