"I have always wanted to play in the (all-star) game," said Smitherman, "I know that great DBs have played in the game. And I just wanted to play in it and represent my state. It is a great honor and blessing to be playing for my state."
While this coming weekend will be full of excitement for the talented cornerback, last weekend was also exciting. He took his official visit to Mississippi State. And it was a unique weekend due to a special event in his life.
"I really loved the visit, especially because it was on my 18th birthday," said Smitherman. "They brought me out a cake and sung Happy Birthday to me. We went out to dinner and I got to hang out with the players. I loved it. It felt like home."
Smitherman was a very highly recruited player prior to his commitment to Mississippi State, and teams have tried to change his mind since the commitment. But Smitherman knows where he is going.
"Some teams tried to come back on me but I'm solid with Mississippi State," he said. "That's where I am going."
There is also a very special person in his life that he wants to make happy. And attending Mississippi State will make her very happy.
"My mom told me that she wants me at Mississippi State, and I want to make her happy," said Smitherman, with a big smile on his face.
A momma's boy? Yep, but what son isn't?
