MSU Baseball Scrimmage Info

The preseason No. 14th ranked Mississippi State Bulldog baseball team played a scrimmage Tuesday night with the Maroon team defeating the Gray team 1-0.

The game was played with each batter having a 1-1 count on them when they stepped to the plate.

The Maroon team scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the 3rd off of freshman lefthanded pitcher Paxton Stover. Jake Vickerson knocked in the run on a ball hit to the right side of the infield, scoring Cody Walker who led off the inning with a walk.

There were five hits in the game, all singles. Josh Lovelady, Reid Humphreys, Jacob Robson, Matthew Britton and Cole Gordon had the base hits.

Robson also stole two bases, both in the first inning.

Pitching-wise, Paxton Stover threw 3 innings, allowing 1 run on 2 hits and 4 walks while striking out 3. His velo was consistently 82-83, topping out in the 85-86 range.

Hard-throwing sophomore righty Dakota Hudson took over for Stover and threw 2 innings, allowing no runs on 1 hit and 1 walk to go along with his 2 strikeouts. His velo was 91-93 consistently, topping out in the 94-96 range.

Freshman righthander Cole Gordon looked outstanding in his 3-inning outing, giving up no runs on 0 hits and 1 walk to go along with his 5 Ks. His velo was 86-87, topping out at 89. It appears that he has added a couple of miles per hour to his fastball since the fall.

Sophomore lefty Vance Tatum was also dominating in his performance, striking out 5 batters while giving up 0 runs on 1 hit and 1 walk in 2 innings of work. His consistent velo was 87-88, top velo was 89.

Senior Trevor Fitts finished the game, throwing 1 inning, allowing 0 runs on 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 2. His velo was 87-88, tops 89. He showed a devastating curveball that he used to get his 2 Ks and a weak grounder back to the mound that ended the game.

The Bulldogs play three games this weekend, Friday at 3:45 pm and Saturday and Sunday at 1 pm.
