Updating The Spring Football Depth Chart

For Tuesday’s practice, the Bulldogs pulled on the pads and made their first moves towards real spring camp contact. But only moves, as NCAA rules restrict tackling for a little bit longer.

A few offensive Bulldogs should be grateful for that. Or maybe, a little less show-offy than they were Tuesday. Knowing they couldn’t yet be tackled there were some instances of extra spin-moves in front of defenders, or a little added showboating with the ball after runs and catches and such. Soon enough, the tackling team will be cleared to make their own moves.

For this third day nearly a half-dozen Bulldogs were still held out of any work at all. They were QB Damian Williams, WR De’Runnya Wilson, CB Taveze Calhoun, S Kendrick Market, and LB Dezmond Harris. After finishing their rehab assignments though all were turned loose to watch 11-on-11 work and even assist in advising their cohorts after plays. #2 quarterback Williams, recovering with reportedly a small tear to a pectoral muscle, was clearly itching to get into action again the way he stood behind the offense with helmet in hand.

There have been no major position moves by varsity Dogs since camp began. Though one walk-on, Josiah Phillips, has switched from reserve quarterback to linebacker where he’s running on the third unit at an outside slot.

With more 11-man lineups working, our unofficial depth chart has been adjusted as follows. Fans familiar with MSU's offense will not be surprised to see shifts from side to side, or slot to slot, by the versatile wide receiver group. In fact, running backs Aeris Williams and Dontavian Lee took about as many snaps as split ends as at their named positions. And while one is listed in front of the other, the two redshirt backs are really equal in status.
