GPTV: John Holland Goes Yard In Sunday Win

After three shutout losses Mississippi State needed something, anything good to happen at the plate. It came in Sunday’s second frame as second baseman John Holland lined a no-doubt home run, ending a string of 29 scoreless innings for the Diamond Dogs.

Holland’s solo shot was supported by two more runs in the sixth inning, on a RBI-triple by 1B Wes Rea and a run-scoring single from SS Ryan Gridley, as Mississippi State edged Auburn 3-1. The Sunday win salvaged a split of the weekend series and leaves the Bulldogs 19-11, 3-6 SEC.

The home run was the first time Holland has reached home this season, and was one of his three Sunday hits. Or, one-third of the team’s total safeties. Nine base hits did match the total by Bulldog batters in the previous two losses combined. In the accompanying video, Holland comments how he played summer ball with the Auburn pitcher serving up his shot.

Those sixth-inning scores also made a winner of reliever RHP Trevor Fitts, who stranded a pair of go-ahead runners in his fifth inning and went on to put down 13 of the 14 Tigers he faced. Fitts (2-2) had missed last weekend’s series at Kentucky with a sore shoulder, but was strong enough today for 4.1 innings with one hit and two strikeouts. He was working in relief of starter LHP Vance Tatum.
