Jones Details Summer Plans

One of the first big dominoes that fell in Mississippi State's dominant showing for the in state 2015 signing class was the commitment of Louisville standout Dontea Jones. Jones held offers from some of the top teams in the conference, but elected to stay closer to home for his college career. Now slated to play tight end, Jones is eager to complete his coursework and enroll for fall camp.

Dontea Jones profile

Jones has spent a lot of time on the Mississippi State campus over the course of the past year, with his most recent visit coming the weekend the Bulldogs held their annual Maroon and White spring game. The talented Jones came away encouraged about the future of Bulldog football.

"I thought we looked great during the spring game," Jones said. "Dak Prescott looked great throwing the football. He really looked great and I am excited to see what he does on the field this year.

"I thought Nick Fitzgerald looked great too. He has the chance to do some big things once Dak is gone. I really thought he looked like he was ready to be the starter when Dak leaves. He throw the ball real good. I am excited about playing with him."

Jones paid special attention to the tight ends. With departed seniors Malcolm Johnson and Brandon Hill leaving the program, there remains room for a newcomer to step up and fill the vacancy in that personnel group.

"I think we look pretty good at tight end right now, but we have some big shoes to fill," Jones said. "Gus Walley is the best tight end on the team right now. There are some other guys doing some good things, but we don't really have that overall tight end who can come in and do everything. That's what I want to be and I am working hard to be that kind of player, because I want to be on the field early. I want to make a contribution."

While many of his 2015 signing class peers are preparing to enroll at Mississippi State in June to attend summer school and take part in spring workouts, Jones explains that he still has some work to do before he joins them.

"I am going to take a couple of classes to get everything handled," Jones said. "They are going to get with me, so I can get all of that set up real soon. I am doing real good in school right now. I only have a couple of weeks left. Last week is like our last week of school and then we have our exams.

"I am going to be getting my classes all set up then and I then I will get everything taken care of."

Even if Jones is not able to be present with the team in the early going of summer, he is not planning to sit back and wait for something to happen. Coming in at a position of need, Jones is eager to do his part to prepare for the 2015 season.

"I have been working hard and I am going to be doing all of my workouts, so I can be ready when I get up there," Jones explained. "I think we have the chance to have a great season this year. We have a lot of talent coming back and a lot of those guys who are starting this year played a lot last year.

"I am expecting some big things this year. I think we have a chance to be even better this year than we were last year. The difference this year is that people won't be surprised when we do it like they were last year."
