Louisiana Tech transfer Xavian Stapleton talks about his commitment to Mississippi State.

  • Name: Xavian Stapleton
  • Classification: Sophomore
  • College: Louisiana Tech
  • High School: Madison Central (MS) High School
  • Position: Shooting Guard/Small Forward
  • HT-WT: 6-foot-7, 210
  • Colleges of Interest: Signed with Mississippi State

  • You committed to Mississippi State. What do you like about them?
"Really it was about the facts that Mississippi State is close to my home and they have Coach (Ben) Howland. He is a really good coach. He has been at a lot of other programs and has had a lot of success going to the NCAA Tournament and getting his players to the next level. With him and the staff that they have at Mississippi State now, they can help me do the same."

What were some things that you can do that they really liked about you?
"Coach Howland said he likes my ability to shoot the ball. He thinks that I can be a really good shooter for them. And he also likes my athleticism. He said with those two attributes that I have he can make me a great player. And he thinks I can have a great career at Mississippi State."

What is your height and weight?
    "6-7, 210."

That is really good size. What position or positions do you play?
"I can play at the two and the three, especially the three."

Where do you feel the most comfortable?
"It doesn't really matter, they are both out on the wing. But I guess I would say the three."

There are quite a few Mississippi and Alabama kids on the MSU roster. Did that factor into you committing to Mississippi State?
"It kind of helped a little bit. I played against a couple of those guys in high school, Quinndary (Weatherspoon) and Malik (Newman). They are good players. They will be playing this year, their freshman year, while I will be sitting out. Obviously Malik will be gone (to the NBA) when I start playing but it will still be good to be around him because it will help me perfect my game."

What other schools did you consider?
"There were a lot of schools (that showed interest in me). Alabama and Iowa State, along with Mississippi State, were my last three."

When will you be attending Mississippi State?
"I will be going to summer school so I will be coming in this week."
