Big Dawg: Raekwon Davis

Meridian standout Raekwon Davis made an early commitment to Alabama, but the four star defensive lineman reports that he is still considering his college options. With plans on taking official visits to Alabama, LSU and Mississippi State in the post season, the recruiting process is far from settled. This weekend Davis was back in Starkville to see visit with the Bulldogs.

"I just came to look at camp, but I am a little late," Davis said "I wanted to watch some of the drills and the 7-on-7s. I wanted to talk to a couple of the coaches too."

Davis reports a strong attraction to the schools of the SEC West. With a top grouping of Alabama, LSU and Mississippi State, Davis says he has found a lot to like about those programs.

"They are all great football programs, but they are all good when it comes to academics," Davis said. "It's mainly about the academics right now for me. I want to be sure that I get my education."

Alabama currently holds Davis' verbal commitment, but a final decision is not expected until sometime close to signing day if not on national signing day.

"Right now, I really just want to get through my season," Davis said. "I am still open. I know I have a whole 'nother year, so I am still looking around. It will probably be National Signing day before I make my final decision."

Meridian is expected to challenge for the 6A state title this fall. Defensively, the Wildcats are projected to be especially fierce.

"This year, I think we have all of the tools to win a championship," Davis said. "We have the chance to be great. We still need a little work, but we can be great. We just need to all get together. We have all of the tools, we just need to put it altogether."
