GPTV: Robertson Analyzes Erroll Thompson

GPTV: Gene's Page's Steve Robertson analyzes Mississippi State's newest football commitment Erroll Thompson.

Steve Robertson - Welcome back Bulldog fans as we discuss the prospective 2016 signing class. And the newest member of that signing class is Erroll Thompson from Florence, Alabama, a school that has been very good to Mississippi State during the recent years with both Beniquez Brown and Kivon Coman, both of whom are part of the Mississippi State defense. Both are expected to have big years this year for Manny Diaz's squad.

Those relationships are a big part of why Erroll Thompson is a Mississippi State Bulldog. Because of the experience Beniquez Brown has had learning the schemes with Manny Diaz and because Beniquez Brown is now an NFL prospect due to his time at Mississippi State, that helped sell Mississippi State to Erroll Thompson.

Erroll, of course, has several offers from schools including Alabama, Michigan, Louisville, Kentucky and several others. But Mississippi State has been a factor in his recruitment since day one. Since Mississippi State extended the offer they immediately jumped to favored status. But once Alabama offered it was kind of back and forth between State and Alabama. But now that the camp sessions are over and Erroll has had the chance to visit several schools, Mississippi State, obviously, was the pick or we wouldn't be having this discussion.

I will tell you this, he is a guy who is a very beefy, physical middle linebacker. He is your prototypical linebacker that plays in the Southeastern Conference. He is the kind of guy who can get off those blocks and take on the guards and handle the rigors of interior line play if necessary at Mississippi State.

And when you go out and look at the Alabamas and LSUs of the world you have to physical and strong in the middle. And Erroll brings a physical presence to Mississippi State. You don't have to (only) have the Matt Wells type linebackers who can play every position at linebacker. At some point you have to go get a guy who can step in there and plug a hole, a gap as a linebacker and really stuff the run. And I think that is where Erroll Thompson excels. I think he is the kind of guy who can plug in and bring that hat and make everybody around him on defense better because of the fact that they can kind of clean up after he causes a mess in the interior.
