Steve Robertson - Welcome back Bulldogs, as we continue our discussions about the 2016 Mississippi State signing class.
One of the more exciting players and probably needful commitments in this class is tight end Christian Roberson out of Powder Springs, Georgia.
Christian was a guy who was identified very early in the process and picked up an offer from Mississippi State very early, not long after signing day. He is a guy who the spring evaluation period was very good to, picking up several offers including Florida, Michigan and others. But Mississippi State was very consistent with their efforts with him. They were able to get him as well as his family on campus and really sell him on the opportunities that lie here at Mississippi State because of the way Mississippi State uses their tight ends. Malcolm Johnson comes to mind (as a player) with a similar skillset. Malcolm, of course, was a great leader in this program. And Christian is kind of that same constitution. He is a very good student who is going to major in animal sciences and become a veterinarian. So, obviously, Mississippi State was a good pick for him. But also, too, Scott Sallach deserves a lot of credit for going out and identifying his guy and then going out and getting him.
I had the chance to speak to Christian Roberson's family after Big Dawg Camp and they are absolutely overjoyed with his decision and already feel like they are a part of the Mississippi State family. Christian (also) tells me that he already feels at home here. He will be a Decembers graduate which means he will be able to enroll in January and take part in spring practices which means he can go ahead and compete for a spot on next year's team. I think that was a big part of things. As you have seen Mississippi State and Dan Mullen has really kind of push those December graduates when they can get them. And Christian is one of those.
Christian is a guy who comes in at a position next year where State will need some playmakers. And as you guys know from watching this offense a tight end is a big part of things. And with the quarterbacks that are under-developed, guys like Nick Fitzgerald who will need those safety valves and those routes across the field across the face of the defense. A guy like Christian can come in and build some rapport with the younger quarterbacks like Elijah Staley and Nick Fitzgerald, which could allow him to have some opportunities to play next year as a true freshman.
