Steve Robertson - Welcome back Bulldog fans as we discuss the 2016 verbal commitments of the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
One of the more intriguing prospects is Dontrel Allen out of East Saint John of Reserve, Louisiana. Dontrel is a guy who came to camp after really catching Mississippi State's eye after the spring evaluation period. He came in and had a tremendous June camp. There were several current Mississippi State Bulldog players who were at the camp who inquired about who Dontrel was. They thought that he was a guy who certainly had some ability.
I tell you, Dontrel is a guy who has kind of flown under the radar. There were some 40 (yard dash) times that leaked out early on that might have hurt his recruitment. They were 4.6, 4.7 type times. He came to Mississippi State and ran sub-4.4 times multiple times. Then he came back to the Big Dawg Camp and did it again. So, speed is not a question mark with him.
He is also a guy who will hit you. He will absolutely change your oil for you in the open field. He is not afraid to stick his nose in there. And I think that is a big brand of Mississippi State football. When you think about Mississippi State defense Manny Diaz wants those type guys who bring a lot of effort and the guys who can defend on an island at times because he wants to bring that extra man who can bring pressure. So you are going to have a lot of one-on-one, a lot of man-to-man type coverage. And Dontrel certainly has the ability to do that. He plays the football extremely well. He doesn't have the size some other guys do but his long arms kind of makes up for some of that. And he understands how to high point the football. And I think that makes him dangerous if the quarterback kind of takes a chance and throws the football in his direction. He certainly has the ability to grab it, then turn it the other way and let the hammer down and get into the endzone.
