Mississippi State Emphasizes Focus Before Hosting Louisiana Tech

Let's see. It's Homecoming weekend with all the distractions involved for student-athletes. Beyond this game looms a run of five-straight SEC contests with the Western Division still in play. And then there's a visiting team not intimidated to visit SEC stadiums.

Yes. Most of the elements of a classic mid-season 'trap game' are present when Mississippi State (4-2) hosts Louisiana Tech (4-2) this Saturday at 11:00am. Not only do the teams have the same records, they share mascots in this battle of Bulldogs on Scott Field.

Coach Dan Mullen and staff not only have to get their Bulldogs prepared for the matchup, but maintain focus around all those factors. Fortunately a handful of current Dogs were on the 2011 roster, if not in the game, the last time Louisiana Tech came to campus. It took an end zone interception--when Tech might have kicked a field goal for the win--and an overtime touchdown pass for Mississippi State to avoid a crushing upset.

Expect that near-disaster to be thrown in '15 Bulldog facemasks all week. That, and scouting a pretty competitive Louisiana Tech club on video, ought serve to focus the home team. Even on Homecoming Weekend.
