Cal State Fullerton pitching coach Jason Dietrich visited Mississippi State this past weekend to interview for the vacant MSU pitching coach position. He left today as he arrived Friday, as the pitching coach for Cal State Fullerton.
According to sources close to the situation, Dietrich and Cohen held a long conversation this morning about the position and about the Mississippi State baseball program in general. At the end of the conversation both parties mutually agreed that Dietrich and Mississippi State baseball were not the right fit.
Dietrich, who has never coached collegiately outside of California, had the chance to see and feel first-hand the Mississippi State athletics atmosphere this past weekend. He and Cohen had spent most of the weekend together, first eating a Friday night dinner at Restaurant Tyler which was packed with MSU fans. Then they spent time on the football field during the Mississippi State-Kentucky football game in front of a packed stadium.
With a better understanding of what he would be getting into if he was the pitching coach at Mississippi State, Dietrich sat down with Cohen and they discussed the position and Mississippi State baseball in general. At the end of the conversation they mutually decided it wasn't the right fit.
Cohen will now interview several other outstanding candidates with the hopes that a new pitching coach will be hired very soon.
