State has Nine Scholarship Bulldogs for Three-Game Weekend

Mississippi State’s travel roster for Puerto Rico just got shorter, as forward Demetrius Houston has been suspended by Coach Ben Howland.

No reason has been provided for the suspension, which is indefinite. According to the p.r. release, Houston’s status will be reevaluated when the Bulldogs return from playing in the Puerto Rico Classic this weekend.

The Bulldogs (1-1) leave Tuesday for the three-game, four-day event. Mississippi State faces Miami at 4:00 Thursday (ESPN2) in the opening round; then will play either Texas Tech or Utah on Friday. The third game is Sunday, opponent depending on results.

Houston is a sophomore forward from Montgomery, Ala., Carver High School. He played in State’s successful season-opener last Friday, scoring one basket in six minutes against Eastern Washington. Houston did not play in Monday’s loss to Southern University.

As a freshman Houston produced 3.1 points and 2.3 rebounds playing in 29 games, averaging 13.0 minutes off the bench.

In Houston’s absence Monday senior forward Johnny Zuppardo alternated as backup at both forward and post.

Howland’s team has nine scholarship players available for the weekend.
