Minor High School class of 2017 DB/WR Yul Gowdy

Minor (AL) High School class of 2017 defensive back/wide receiver Yul Gowdy is a name to remember in the class of 2017.

Gowdy has a name that is easy to remember for folks similar to me in age. As he said to me when I repeated his first name Yul, "yes, like (the late actor) Yul Brenner."

While Brenner excelled as an actor, Gowdy is trying to excel in another occupation, football. And he put on a show at the Byron De'Vinner Combine in Homewood, Alabama Saturday afternoon.

Although he down played how well he did ("I thought I did ok but could have done better."), what I saw was a very quick DB who stuck to his man like glue during the one-on-one drill.

He commented on his strengths that allowed him to perform so well in the one-on-ones.

"I have good hips, good awareness, just try to break on the ball as fast as I can," said Gowdy.

His exceptional athletic ability has allowed Gowdy to start for his high school team for most of his prep career.

"I had been starting all my years in high school except when I had my hamstring injury," said Gowdy. "I came back as second string but a week later they moved Maurice Smitherman to safety and put me at corner. So, we were both in the game at the same time."

Smitherman has taken his talent onto to Mississippi State, a place that Gowdy also likes.

"I like Mississippi State," he said. "Their cornerbacks coach Deshea Townsend saw my team play but I had the hamstring injury so he didn't see me play."

As of now, Gowdy is under the radar recruiting-wise. He explained part of the reason for that.

"I haven't gone on any unofficial visits in the past or any Junior Days. Our high school coach is focusing more on our seniors right now because we have a lot of good senior players," said Gowdy.

But Gowdy is hoping to get his name out starting with the upcoming Junior Days in February.

"I hope to go to some Junior Days," he said. "And one of my friends said that Troy wants us to come to one of their Junior Days. I think it is February 18th or 19th."

Gowdy already has an idea what he is looking for in a college.

"I want a go to a school where I will get a good education, play for a good football team, play for a great coach and that has a great atmosphere," said the talented youngster.
