[Premium site article] I talked to Clarksdale High School's outstanding football player Darren Williams Thursday night (Sept. 13). He talked about tonight's football game against South Panola HS and the colleges that he is considering.

Darren, one of the premier players in the nation, has earned numerous pre-season honors this year, including being named a member of TheInsiders Top 101 players list, the Prep Star Spring Top 350 Report, Tom Lemming's Summer 2001 Prep Football Report (one of four players to earn a 5 star ranking in Mississippi), SuperPrep's Pre-Season All-America Team, and the G&W Recruiting Report Southeast All-Area Team. He is also a member of The Clarion-Ledger's Dandy Dozen Team.

Darren (6-3, 195, 4.47) told me that his team will be traveling to Batesville, Mississippi to play the always tough South Panola High School football team. Darren, whose team is undefeated, knows it will be a challenge for his team because he mentioned that South Panola always "has good athletes, year in, and year out."

Although playing South Panola was definitely on his mind, he did talk about the many colleges that have contacted him by phone since September 1st.

According to Darren, "Mississippi State, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Florida, pretty much all of the SEC schools, Notre Dame and many others have called me so far."

When I asked Darren if he was leaning to any school at the moment, he said "not now." He has been rumored to be leaning to Florida and Mississippi State, but Darren said, "I'm not sure where those rumors are coming from."

While he isn't leaning to any school, he has been and is going to be very busy this season going to college football games. So far, he has attended the Mississippi State - Memphis game and plans on attending other games. Darren said, "I plan on going to the LSU - Florida game (at Baton Rouge) and the Mississippi State - Florida game (at Gainesville)."

Darren, as you can see, is a very busy youngster these days. However, lest we forget, even though he is a highly recruited football player, he is still a student and like all students has school work to do. While he told me he has no tests Friday, he did tell me that he "did his current events after football practice" yesterday. They are due each Friday. As you see, his life is not all glamour.

With no college football games scheduled Saturday, you may want to go to Batesville, Mississippi Friday night and check out the Clarksdale - South Panola game. It ought to be a barnburner with two great players, South Panola's outstanding linebacker Chris Herring and Clarksdale's quarterback Darren Williams, going head to head against each other. If that is not enough of an inducement, I'm sure Darren would love to see you there. In fact, when I mentioned to him that I might attend the game, he told me "you need to make it." Take that as a personal invitation to the rest of you.
