Bulldogs Risk Record and RPI with Trips to Troy and Auburn

The Diamond Dogs have fought there way into SEC title contention in large part by winning road games and series. This week offers them more of the same opportunities.

Mississippi State returns to the road with a Wednesday evening appearance in Troy; then it's back up the road for a weekend in Auburn. Maybe most teams feel more comfortable in friendly confines, but 2016 has been a different deal for the Diamond Dogs.

In building a 15-9 SEC record, which has them second in the Western Division and fourth overall in the league, the Bulldogs have won all four conference trips. They've visited Vanderbilt, Florida, LSU, and Alabama; and returned with won-series. Now they have what on-paper appears the easiest such trip of the five. Auburn is in a major rebuilding mode and should present Mississippi State an opportunity not just to take one more road series but possibly sweep.

Except...the new top Tiger has probably the best possible scouting report on Mississippi State. Seven-year Bulldog pitching coach Butch Thompson took over in late fall, having gone through the semester's practice with State. So as Coach John Cohen notes, his former aide has a very good idea how the Bulldogs play this game.

And before that, Cohen cautions not to overlook the Trojans. Who, by the numbers, have the best RPI of the remaining three Bulldog opponents.

Cohen talks about the week and matchups in Tuesday's interview.
