Mississippi State’s record-setting rookie has been named a Freshman All-American by Louisville Slugger. It is Mangum’s second major recognition of the month as he is a Baseball America third-team All-American.
Back in May, the Pearl native started accumulating honors. It began with being named not just first-team All-Southeastern Conference by the league coaches; but with being chosen the SEC’s Freshman of the Year.
Mangum is the first Bulldog rookie since Rafael Palmeiro in 1983 to make first-team All-SEC. And he is the first freshman period to be the conference FOTY, period. Mangum continues to lead all SEC players in batting average as surviving conference clubs prepare for the super regional round this weekend. In fact Mangum is the only SEC swinger above .400, and at .418 right now he is fourth-best in the national batting stats.
And if not a regional or national honor, Mangum certainly scored the chief recognition available to a baseball player in Mississippi. He was chosen to receive the Ferriss Trophy, given to the state’s top collegian, ahead of four other finalists including RHP Dakota Hudson and OF/RHP Reid Humphreys.
For his part starting pitcher Hudson is working on his own list of accolades. He too was named first-team All-SEC by league coaches in May. Baseball America has named him second-team All-America. Collegiate Baseball rated State’s rotation ace even higher, as one of their first-team All-Americans.
Hudson is also among the semifinalists for college baseball’s top individual prize, the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award.
Other all-America squads are forthcoming from media and coaches outlets as well, meaning more chances for Mangum, Hudson, and other Dogs to get their just recognition. Make that, recognitions.
