"I called Coach Cohen and told him that I was committing," said Shamblin, who consistently throws 88-92 miles per hour with his four-seam fastball. "He was excited. Then, I saw him the next day at Lake Pointe (at the Perfect Game World Wood Bat World Series). It was awesome seeing him there."
Choosing a college wasn't easy, especially when you consider Shamblin was a life-long Alabama fan and had offers from both Mississippi State and Alabama.
"I have been an Alabama fan my whole life, and it was between Alabama and Mississippi State," said Shamblin. "I chose Mississippi State because I felt it was a better fit for me to help me get drafted. The coaches would work better with me there than they would at Alabama. And I could just see myself playing there more.
"It was extremely hard but I knew it was the right decision. I was going against what I had been cheering for my whole life, but I knew Mississippi State was a better fit for me."
One of the main reasons he chose Mississippi was their new pitching coach, Gary Henderson.
"I met with Coach Henderson while at State," said Shamblin. "He is the main reason that I am going to State. Everything that I have heard about him is awesome. He gets guys into the Big Leagues all of the time."
While his final decision came down to two schools, Mississippi State and Alabama, there were numerous other schools interested.
"I has an offer from Ole Miss and also had SEC schools Vandy and Tennessee interested in me," said Shamblin. "I also had offers from Memphis, Murray State and Samford."
