[Premium article] I talked to Longview (Texas) HS's outstanding linebacker Marvin Byrdsong (6-3, 235, 4.5) on the telephone last Thursday night (Sept. 13). Subjects ranged from how he has done this season to what schools are showing interest in him.

Marvin is one of the top linebackers in the country. Pre-season honors include selections to the Dave Campbell Texas Magazine's Super Defensive Team, TheInsiders Top 101 List, PrepStar Spring Top 350 list, The G&W Recruiting Report All-American Squad, and SuperPrep's National Top Fifty Squad (one of five LBs on the team).

Marvin, whose older brother Shawn plays Dog Safety for Mississippi State, unofficially visited Mississippi State the weekend of the Memphis game. Marvin visited with the team in the locker room after the game. He also had a chance to visit with Mississippi State linebacker coach, Jim Tompkins.

According to Marvin, "my mother and I had planned on coming to the (Mississippi State vs) Brigham Young game (in Starkville) but that was canceled." He wasn't sure if he would be attending additional Mississippi State games this season.

So far this season, Marvin has had a couple of outstanding games in the first part of the season. He told me, "the first week against Evangel (Academy HS) I had 15 tackles with 9 solos and 1 interception. I was selected the east Texas 5A player of the week. The (second) game I had 10 tackles with 9 solos and two forced fumbles."

Marvin not only has been busy in school and on the field, but on the phone as well. While I was talking to him, he received two calls. In fact, earlier in the night, Marvin said Florida State had called him. The previous day, Marvin received calls from, "Arkansas, Nebraska, Texas, and Oklahoma." Those aren't the only schools that have called him but just the schools that had called him the last two days. He has also received calls from numerous other schools, including Mississippi State the Monday after the MSU vs Memphis game.

Although he is receiving a lot of calls from college coaches, Marvin wasn't ready to name a leader. He did say that he is interested in several schools, including (in his words), "Mississippi State, the University of Texas, LSU, Arkansas, and Florida State."

In case you are wondering, Marvin does check the internet and has checked Gene's Page on occasion.

Look for future updates on Marvin as the season progresses.
