Smith visited Mississippi State Wednesday and liked everything about the visit.

"When I went on my visit we toured the facilities and the campus and everything about it was top notch," said Smith. "Everything about it just seemed to fit me. And their academics support is second to none. The main things for me is keeping God first, going to school and getting a good academic education. I just felt like I should be there."

Mississippi State head coach John Cohen made the offer to Smith at the end of his visit.

"When I received the offer it was an awesome experience because it was a dream come true for me," said Smith, a long-time Mississippi State fan.

Before he made his commitment he wanted to be 100% sure that it was the right decision for him.

"I went home and prayed about it and talked to my parents about it and just wanted to make sure that was the place that I needed to be," said Smith. " And it just felt like home to me."

He then called and committed to Mississippi State.

"I called (Mississippi State pitching) Coach (Gary) Henderson and told him," said Smith, who also had offers from Ole Miss and Southern Miss and interest from Alabama, Arkansas and LSU. "He was fired up having me and he welcomed me to their 2018 class."

He explained what Mississippi State liked about him as a pitcher and position player.

"Coach Henderson and (Mississippi State assistant) Coach (Will) Coggin told me that they like how I could show dominance on the mound and how I could control all three pitches," said Smith, who topped out at 91 miles per hour with his fastball at a recent MSU baseball camp. "They see me coming in and being a starter and possibly having the chance of playing third base."

He is looking forward to working with both coaches when he gets to Mississippi State.

"I really liked (Coach Henderson's) philosophy about pitching and thought it fit me best. And all that I have heard about Coach Coggin are good things," said Smith. "Since he has been at State everything has increased, batting averages and home runs."

Last season Smith was 2-3 with a 1.24 ERA while allowing 28 hits and 6 walks in 45.1 innings. He struck out 61 and teams hit .165 against him. He batted .373 with 10 RBI in 64 official at-bats.
