When he committed, he contacted all three of the Bulldog coaches that had been recruiting him.
"I called (head) Coach (Andy) Cannizaro, (assistant) Coach (Will) Coggin and (pitching) Coach (Gary) Henderson and told them that I was committing," said Sims, who had narrowed his choices to Mississippi State, Clemson, Georgia and Auburn, all of whom he had visited prior to committing. "They were all pretty excited."
He explained why he felt Mississippi State was the best choice for his baseball future.
"The coaches are really awesome," said Sims, who had been recruited by Mississippi State since the summer. "The facilities and the school are great. They are building the new 55 million dollar stadium. The atmosphere is great. There is nothing that Mississippi State doesn't have. And my heart was in it."
He was very impressed with Mississippi State's choice of a new head coach, Andy Cannizaro.
"I knew about him before I met him," said Sims, one of 20 players on the USA 15U National Team. "I have a few friends that are committed to LSU and they were bummed that he ended up leaving. I was excited that he came to Mississippi State. I like his high energy and I am a high energy guy, too. That was big for me."
Sims commented on what Mississippi State liked about him as a pitcher, which is his primary position.
"Coach Coggin was the one who was recruiting me," said Sims. "He said he really liked the way I pitched. And I think they liked my competitiveness."
Sims, who is one month away from being 16-years old, has the makings of a power arm.
"I have gotten my fastball up to 91 miles per hour, and I am consistently in the 87-89 range and have gotten up to 88-90," said Sims. "I also have a really good slider that has been up to mid to high 70s. It is my strikeout pitch."
As a freshman, Sims had a 5-3 won-loss record and a 4.39 ERA.
