Jackson (MS) Academy class of 2018 3-star forward prospect Michael Barber provides an update.

  • Name: Michael Barber
  • Classification: 2018
  • High School: Jackson Academy
  • Position: Forward Combo
  • HT-WT: 6-foot-8, 220
  • Scout.com Ranking: 3-Star

Individually, Barber is happy with how he is doing this season, although he is not satisfied.

"I am achieving what I want to achieve," said the talented forward. "I am averaging something like 21 points and 12 or 13 rebounds per game, but I am still trying to get better, maybe get some more boards, average a few more assists, help my teammates get more involved. I always want to improve."

Offensively, he is using his size advantage to score more baskets.

"Offensively, I am attacking the glass more, trying to find two or three more easy buckets to help my team win," said Barber.

Barber has been highly recruited for the past couple of years. And his recruitment continues to be heavy.

"Oklahoma, Northwestern State, Baylor, Ole Miss, (Mississippi) State, Texas, UAB, Georgia Tech and several others are on me, some hard," said Barber. "I have offers from Baylor, Ole Miss, (Mississippi) State, Georgia Tech, UAB and several others that I can't think of."

According to Barber, both instate SEC schools are on him hard.

"I talk to (Mississippi State assistant) Coach (George) Brooks," said Barber, who has unofficially visited MSU several times this season. "He is a really good guy. I like talking to him. I talk to (Mississippi State head) Coach (Ben) Howland some, too. I always have good talks with them. They want me over there pretty badly. I know (Mississippi State freshman) Mario Kegler. I played with him for one summer. He is like a big brother to me.

"I talk to (Ole Miss assistant) Coach (Todd) Abernethy a lot, too."

But he is still very much open to all teams.

"My recruitment is still open to everybody," said Barber.
