MSU drops game one at Oregon in Pitcher's duell

EUGENE, Ore. – On a chilly Friday night at P.K. Park, Mississippi State dropped a 1-0 pitcher's duel to Oregon in a baseball series opener. MSU (6-4) was led in hitting by Brent Rooker, who went 2-for-4. Jake Mangum extended his career-long hit streak to 23 games with an infield single in the eighth inning. Ryan Gridley added a hit to increase his own hit streak to six games. Elijah MacNamee delivered a two out, pinch-hit double in the ninth to round out MSU hitting.

The lone run was in the fifth inning when Oregon's leadoff man Kyle Kasser hit his first career home run. The Ducks (5-3) loaded the bases in the sixth inning but could not plate another score.

Each team finished with five hits. Kasser finished with three hits for the Ducks.

Pilkington (1-2) struck out seven batters and walked four in seven innings of work. He only allowed one run on five hits against the Ducks. Trysten Barlow and Ryan Cyr also threw for the Bulldogs, neither allowing a hit.

"There were two really great pitching performances tonight," MSU head coach Andy Cannizaro said. "Konnor was outstanding. You saw what he is going to be able to do for us this year. It's hard to stomach a loss like this because we pitched it well. I am really happy that Konnor will be going for us on Friday nights. He gives us a chance every time out."

David Peterson (2-1) struck out a career-best and program-record 17 batters in his start for the Ducks. He pitched eight shutout innings and allowed just three hits. Freshman right-hander Kenyon Yovan threw the final inning and earned his third save of the season.

State will retake the field at PK Park on Saturday for game two of the three-game series against the Ducks. Sophomore Peyton Plumlee (2-0, 0.64 ERA) is slated to take the mound for the Bulldogs. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. CT and fans can watch it live through Pac-12.com.
