Harris County (GA) High School class of 2018 center Jessika Carter recruiting update

Harris County (GA) High School head women's basketball coach Steffanie Ramsey talks about her very talented class of 2018 center Jessika Carter, a player that is being recruited by colleges throughout the nation, including 2017 national runner-up Mississippi State.

  • Name: Jessika Carter
  • Classification: 2018
  • High School: Harris County (GA) High School
  • Position: Center
  • HT: 6-foot-5
  • 2017 High School Stats: PPG 18.0, RPG 14.0, APG 2.0, SPG 1.2, BPG 6.3
  • Schools of Interest: Schools throughout the nation

Coach Ramsey explained what college coaches are most impressed by when they watch Carter play.

"The number 1 thing that impresses a lot of people is she is 6-5 and can run the floor like a guard and catch the ball in the open floor and finish," said Ramsey. "You don't find many big kids who can do that. In fact, in practice, she runs with the guards. She never runs with the post players.

"She also has great court vision for a post player. (An example of that is) last summer, she developed this high-low action for when people would double-team her on the block. She would go to the free throw line elbow and make an entry pass down low. (That action) pretty much freed up the next post player who was down low because everybody followed her, expecting her to take the shot.

    "She has a tremendous upside."

According to Ramsey, numerous schools are showing interest in Carter.

"She is being recruited by Auburn, Georgia Tech, Mississippi State, LSU, Georgia, Rutgers, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Wake Forest, Tennessee, Miami, Florida State, Kentucky, Colorado, Maryland, Mercer, there are so many," said Ramsey. "Pretty much everybody who is recruiting her has offered her. She received her first offer her freshman year from Auburn."

As of now, Carter is completely open to just about everybody recruiting her.

"I asked her to give me a list of her top schools at the beginning of our season this year and she gave me a list of 30 schools," said Ramsey. "She said she likes everybody, that she is open to everybody."

Ramsey expects Carter to narrow her list down within a couple of weeks.

"After this (NCAA recruiting) evaluation period is over and we come back home next weekend, she and I are going to sit down and we are going to come up with a list of her top 10 schools, schools that she is really considering," said Ramsey. "We will do a little more extensive research on those schools. We will then play during the summer session of the July evaluation period and see if any other schools interests her. If not, then we will pick her top five and start taking visits in August and September."

Carter is not the only talented basketball player in her family. She also has a younger sister who has already received an SEC offer.

"She also has a sister named Zikeyah who is a freshman," said Ramsey. "She is only 14-years-old and is already 6-4.5 tall. The doctors are projecting her to grow to about 6-6, 6-7. Mississippi State called Monday and offered her. That is her first official offer, although she has some strong interest from some other schools."
