MSU class of 2017 baseball signee Alex Pener update

An analysis of Mississippi State class of 2017 signee Alex Pener, a first baseman from Scottsdale (AZ) Community College.

  • Name: Alex Pener
  • Classification: Sophomore
  • Position: 1B
  • Ht: Wt: 6-1, 205
  • Bats-Throws: S-R
  • Junior College: Scottsdale (AZ) Community College
  • High School: Blue Valley Northwest High School in Kansas

High School - An All-State selection as a first baseman, Alex was also a second-team selection on the All-Eastern Kansas League Baseball team as a pitcher (the closer on the team). He was Most Valuable Player of his high school team for three straight years.

2016 Season - As a freshman, Pener hit .321 with 11 home runs and 48 RBI in a wood bat conference. He earned 2016 NJCAA Division II 2nd-Team All-American honors and was also chosen to the All-ACCAC Baseball Team as a 1st Team selection.

2017 Season - Pener, partly due to an injury to his wrist suffered early in the season, didn't quite have as good of a season as he did as a freshman, but still hit .297 with 11 home runs and 45 RBIs during his sophomore season with SCC. Pener is an excellent student who has made the Athletic Honor Roll both years at SCC.

Recruiting - He chose Mississippi State over New Mexico, Alabama, Arizona State and Louisiana Tech.

2017 MLB Draft - If Pener is drafted, I expect it to be in one of the later rounds.

MSU 2018 Season - I expect Pener, even if drafted late, to stick with MSU and compete for the starting first base spot that should open up due to the likelihood that current starting first baseman Brent Rooker will be drafted in one of the first two rounds of the 2017 MLB Draft and go pro.
