MSU class of 2017 baseball signee Marshall Gilbert update

An analysis of Mississippi State class of 2017 signee Marshall Gilbert, a catcher from John A. Logan College (IL).

  • Name: Marshall Gilbert
  • Classification: Sophomore
  • Position: C
  • Ht: Wt: 6-1, 210
  • Bats-Throws: R-R
  • Junior College: John A. Logan College (IL)
  • High School: Westosha Central (WI) High School

High School - As a senior in high school, Gilbert hit .480 with 5 home runs, 12 doubles and knocked in 36 runs in 24 games.

2016 Season - As a freshman, he hit .406 with 20 doubles, 5 triples and 12 home runs while knocking in 67 runs in 52 games. He was a 2016 NJCAA Division I 2nd Team All-America.

2017 Season - During the 2017 season, Gilbert hit .367 with 10 doubles, 3 triples and 12 home runs. He knocked in 63 RBI. Although a power hitter, he doesn't strike out much, 38 times in 206 at-bats (18%). Defensively, he had a .994 fielding percentage and threw out 12 of 33 stolen base attempts.

Recruiting - Gilbert chose Mississippi State over Alabama, Missouri, Michigan State, Illinois and Western Kentucky.

2017 MLB Draft - It's possible Gilbert could be a middle to late round pick in the 2017 MLB Draft.

MSU 2018 Season - Even if he is drafted, I expect Gilbert to make it to MSU next fall. He and sophomore-to-be Dustin Skelton will compete for the starting catching position. Gilbert's bat projects as a middle of the order hitter, probably 4th or 5th in the lineup.
