MSU class of 2017 signee Josh Hatcher update

An analysis of Mississippi State class of 2017 signee Josh Hatcher, an outfielder from Lee County High School in Albany, Georgia.

  • Name: Josh Hatcher
  • Classification: 2017
  • Position: OF
  • Ht: Wt: 6-2, 190
  • Bats-Throws: L-L
  • High School: Lee County High School in Albany, Georgia

High School - He was selected a 2017 Preseason Rawlings-Perfect Game 3rd Team All-American. He was also a Perfect Game 2016 Underclass 3rd Team All-American. Perfect Game rates him a 10, which means he is a potential very high draft pick and/or Elite level college prospect. They also rate him the 135th best high school prospect in the class of 2017.

2017 Season - His senior season he has hit .321 with 7 doubles, 2 triples and 2 home runs while knocking in 26 runs. He also pitches and has a 11-0 record witha 0.59 ERA. He struck out 65 in 71 innings, while giving up 43 hits and 24 walks.

Recruiting - He chose Mississippi State over Alabama, Auburn and Florida State.

2017 MLB Draft - Hatcher is projected to be a 9th to 10th round pick in the mock drafts. I expect that he will wind up being drafted in a later round due to his signability factor.

MSU 2018 Season - I expect Hatcher to make it to campus next fall even if he is drafted. He is a guy who will do well in college because it will give him time to develop and gain additional strength. MSU has done very well signing guys like Hatcher, guys that scouts love but want to see how they develop in college for three years. Examples are guys like Hunter Renfroe, Brent Rooker and Jake Mangum to name a few. Hatcher is a versatile outfielder who can play any of the outfield positions. He has the arm to play right field and the speed to play center field. He could have an impact as a true freshman if he shows that he can quickly adjust to major college pitchers. His bats projects to be anywhere from 3rd to 6th in the lineup.
