Class of 2017 baseball signee Owen Lovell update

An analysis of Mississippi State class of 2017 signee Owen Lovell, an outfielder from Cullman (AL) High School.

  • Name: Owen Lovell
  • Classification: 2017
  • Position: OF
  • Ht: Wt: 6-4, 225
  • Bats-Throws: R-R
  • High School: Cullman (AL) High School

High School - He was a 2017 Rawlings-Perfect Game Preason 3rd Team All-American selection. He was also a Perfect Game 2016 Underclass 2nd Team All-American. Perfect Game rates him a 10, which means he is a potential very high draft pick and/or Elite level college prospect. He is rated by Perfect Game as the 144th best player in the class of 2017.

2017 Season - This season he has hit .434 with a .536 on base percentage and a .754 slugging percentage. He has hit 7 home runs and knocked in 41 runs.

Recruiting - Lovell chose Mississippi State over Alabama.

2017 MLB Draft - Lovell could be drafted in the 8 to 10 round range due to his great size, exceptional speed for his size and power potential. He is a very projectable prospect due to his unique combination of size and athletic ability.

MSU 2018 Season - I think Lovell is a guy that pro scouts love but would prefer to see him spend three years on a college campus. Mississippi State's coaches have been great about signing players like this and turning them into first or second round picks. I could see Lovell coming in and playing early if he can quickly adjust to SEC caliber pitching. But I really see him coming into his own his second season at MSU. He has the potential to be a star. He is a true middle of the order type hitter. Due to his very good footspeed and lack of great arm strength, I see his position being left field.
