MSU class of 2017 baseball signee Tanner Allen update

An analysis of Mississippi State class of 2017 signee Tanner Allen, an infielder/outfielder from UMS-Wright Prep in Mobile, Alabama.

  • Name: Tanner Allen
  • Classification: 2017
  • Position: OF/INF
  • Ht: Wt: 6-0, 180
  • Bats-Throws: L-R
  • High School: UMS-Wright Prep (Mobile, AL)

High School - He was a 2017 Rawlings-Perfect Game Preseason Honorable Mention All-American. He was also a 2016 Perfect Game Underclass All-American First Team. Allen was a member of the USA Baseball 18U 40-man roster. He was rated the 151st best prospect in the class of 2017 by Perfect Game. He is rated a 10 prospect-wise, the highest score you can receive from Perfect Game.

2017 Season - This season he has hit .398 with 10 doubles, 3 triples, 3 home runs while knocking in 14 runs.

Recruiting - He chose MSU over offers from LSU and Auburn. Previously committed to LSU but switched his commitment to MSU after Andy Cannizaro was hired as the head coach for the Bulldogs. Cannizaro was his primary recruiter when he was coaching at LSU.

2017 MLB Draft - He projects by various mock drafts as an 8th to 9th round selection.

MSU 2018 Season - I expect Allen to chose MSU over the pros. He can play either the outfield or the infield. His best position in the infield is second base. He very well could come in and back up starting second baseman Hunter Stovall next season, then take over the starting spot his sophomore season. He projects as a very good hitter due to his very quick hands. Shows the potential for some power from the left side. Won't strike out much. He projects to hit in the upper third of the lineup.
